Action against litter in the Meuse Valley: “There has been a problem with litter here for years”

In the five Limburg Maas municipalities, strict checks will be carried out for litter in the coming weeks. Together with Mooimakers, Regionale Landschap Kempen en Maasland (RLKM) is launching an action to make the Meuse Valley waste-free. The checks will mainly take place in recreational places.

If you are going for a walk or bike ride on the Maas in the coming weeks, pay extra attention to waste. The nature reserve has been very popular lately and that brings a lot of litter. “It is a beautiful piece of nature, but many visitors are nonchalant and just leave their waste here”, says Flemish Environment Minister Zuhal Demir (N-VA). Community guards and volunteers will now keep an eye on keeping the Meuse Valley clean.

The checks will mainly take place at busy times and in recreational areas, such as beaches and picnic areas. People who throw their waste neatly in the trash can will be thanked by the volunteers. But anyone who throws their rubbish on the ground can even be fined.   In the Meuse Valley, actions against litter regularly take place. Last year, for example, there were clean-up operations and investigations into the source of litter in the Meuse.

Mooimakers‘ current action is part of the European LIVES project that is trying to reduce plastic waste in the Meuse.
